Poster Ideas

Feedback Response + Changes

In response to feedback from our initial cuts and our progress so far, we have decided to reshoot certain scenes to add a more comedic element, as the rough cuts from the first shoot didn't pass off enough comedy.

  • Replace shots 23-27. Same scenario and location, but rather have Sam see Mara behind him and quickly open the door again so he doesn't see her, as he closes to the door to reveal Mara, she will enthusiastically start say hi etc. when he will scream and suddenly faint.
  • Rerecord the voiceovers and dialogue, as Sam's voice will need to be more uplifting and less 'sentimental' and serious. Overall acting needs to be more exaggerated to enforce comedic element.
  • Include a short scene of Sam pushing Mara on a set of swings, both laughing and talking, then include shot from an outsider's perspective of Sam pushing an empty swing, laughing to himself. Shot of person's reaction. This will either replace the gun scene at the end of the trailer or the walking scene 47-49.
  • Shot 44 - quickly pans to Sam with his reaction.

Changes to Genre

Since we came up with our film trailer idea the genre has changed. Initially, we wanted to follow a very conventional comedic route but because of the heartfelt and romantic nature of our film it has become more sentimental. Though we are still using visual comedy, a convention of a typical comedy film, we want to pursue a more 'indie' route by using more emotive dialogue and focusing on the drama.

Poster Shoot

These were taken during our first day of filming and present several different styles of poster. The images with the white background are more simplistic whereas those with coloured lighting and props suggest the narrative. For editing we will change the background or reshoot with alternative backgrounds in case we have trouble editing the shapes out.

Storyboard Animatic

In the animatic we haven't included non diegetic sound of background music as we haven't decided exactly which tracks we are using, and as we are creating one of our tracks from scratch, it would take longer than usual.

Final Storyboard

Make Up Test

INGREDIANTS:
BLUE FOOD COLOURING
RED FOOD COLOURING
GOLDEN SYRUP

RESULT:
The colour came out very realistic but the mixture was too wet and wouldn't dry. This is ideal for the death scene where the blood needs to look fresh, but for the rest of the trailer it needs to look dried. We brainstormed some solutions and our best option is to use setting spray.

Comedy in 'Swiss Amy Man' Trailer

Here I have analysed the levels of comedy created throughout the trailer. The comedy of 'Swiss Army Man' is not concentrated so much on the visual aspect, but rather on the concept of a corpse being able to perform unnatural tasks that no human or creature would be able to do, such as shoot bullets from the mouth and act as a grappling hook and produce fresh water from the stomach. The comedy begins at the start of the trailer, after Hank (Paul Dano) attempts to hang himself. Whilst he is searching for a heartbeat or any sign of life and movement, Danny lets out gas much to Hank's surprise, this paired with the melancholic/ominous non diegetic music suddenly stopping generates this funny moment that perhaps reflects Hank's train of thought, as the panic and concern for this corpse immediately goes away. Despite there being a fair number of points throughout the trailer where the comedic element is utilised, there are still moments where the music changes and the accompanying voiceover also changes tone, and there is a seriousness and almost beauty to the trailer.
